How to Plan a Complete Eye Care Setup from Scratch
A room-by-room walkthrough of specifying a new practice — from the floor plan and power supply
through to the order in which equipment should arrive.
Most practices start this process with a product list. We would argue that is the wrong
end. Start with the patient journey: how someone enters, where they wait, where they are measured,
where they are examined and where they collect their spectacles. Once that sequence is on paper, the
equipment list tends to write itself — and so does the argument for what can wait until year two.
- Floor area and power first. What a six-metre chart distance and three-phase supply really demand of the room.
- Sequencing the purchase. Which instruments must arrive together, and which can safely be phased.
- Budget bands. Three worked specifications — district vision centre, urban optical centre and teaching hospital.
- Common planning errors. The five layout mistakes that cost practices most after opening.
